Shop By Area Rug Construction
Machine-Made
Area rugs made on a powered loom are a favorite of budget-conscious home
decorators and are available in all popular sizes, colors, and materials.
Hand-Tufted
Created on a base cloth that is attached to a frame. An artisan punches
yarn to the surface using a hand-held tufting tool called a "gun." The
underside of the rug is then coated with latex, and a backing is applied to
anchor and protect the stitches.
Hand-Knotted
Knotting individual yarns by hand distinguishes these area rugs. This
technique has been handed down through generations for more than 1,000 years and will add to anyone's home décor.
Hand-Hooked
Yarn is pushed and looped through a canvas cloth to create looped pile.
The yarn loops can be sheared, or they may be left uncut.
Printed
Patterns formed with dyes can be printed onto a rug surface through a variety
of techniques, including screen printing and sponge printing.
Shag
Pile tufts, so long that they lay on their sides to form the walking surface,
characterize shag rugs. Made of either cut-pile or cut-and-loop plied
yarn.
Braided
Available in a appealing variety of materials: from nylon to cotton chenille to
wool. Braids may be tubular (with only one core forming a round braid),
or flat (shaped into a flat braid using two core yarns).
